J12 Swim founder celebrated for more than three decades of dedication to inclusive swimming, confidence building and personalised aquatic tuition.
William Hugh Kildare, founder of J12 Swim, has been named Inspirational Man in Business – Inclusive Aquatics 2026, recognising a career spanning more than 32 years and a longstanding commitment to helping people of all ages and abilities feel safe, confident and supported in the water.
William’s journey began through a love of swimming and a desire to help others overcome fear and develop confidence. Early in his career, he recognised that effective swimming tuition involved far more than teaching strokes and technique. Building trust, understanding individual needs and creating a positive relationship with the water became central to his approach.

In 2004, William founded Star Swimming Academy, growing it into a multi-award-winning academy teaching more than 1,000 swimmers each week with a team of up to 30 instructors and assistants. In 2025, he began a new chapter with J12 Swim, placing an even stronger emphasis on inclusive, personalised and supportive swimming tuition.
Reflecting on the philosophy that has shaped his career, William said:
“The key factors have been hard work, consistency, kindness and a genuine commitment to every swimmer. I have always tried to treat people as individuals and understand what they need rather than using one approach for everyone.”
That individual approach has enabled William to support children, adults and swimmers with additional needs, adapting tuition around confidence levels, abilities and personal circumstances.
Strong relationships with families, schools, swimming venues, instructors and partner organisations have also played an important part in his work, with some professional relationships spanning more than 15 years.
William’s own experiences with ADHD, dyslexia and ulcerative colitis have presented challenges throughout his career, but have also influenced the empathy, creativity and determination he brings to both teaching and leadership. During difficult periods, he has focused on tackling one challenge at a time while remaining motivated by the trust placed in him by swimmers, families and schools.
For William, the most rewarding moments are not defined by business figures or accolades, but by individual progress. Whether helping a frightened child put their face in the water, supporting an adult in overcoming a lifelong fear or seeing a swimmer with additional needs gain confidence and independence, those milestones remain at the heart of his work.
“The greatest reward is watching someone achieve something they once believed was impossible.”
William is equally proud of having trained former swimmers who have gone on to become swimming instructors themselves, allowing the knowledge, values and standards developed throughout his career to continue benefiting future generations.
His advice to those building a career in aquatics is to gain the correct qualifications, continue learning and remember that every swimmer is different. He believes patience, listening and trust should come before progress, while success should be measured by the positive difference made to people’s lives rather than solely through numbers, awards or financial results.
Looking ahead, William plans to continue developing J12 Swim as an inclusive swimming provider while preserving the personal and caring approach behind its work. His ambitions include forming further partnerships with schools, swimming venues, charities and other academies in the UK and overseas, supporting new instructors and creating more opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the water safely.
Receiving the Inspirational Man in Business – Inclusive Aquatics 2026 recognition has also encouraged William to reflect on the impact of his career and reinforced his determination to continue championing inclusive aquatics.
After more than three decades in swimming, his focus remains unchanged: to see the individual before the challenge, create an environment where people feel supported and ensure that everyone is given the opportunity to discover what they are capable of achieving in the water.
