Over 24 years at Situations, Melissa has progressed from joining the agency to becoming a shareholder in 2011, sole Managing Director in 2021 and, ultimately, its major shareholder. Along the way, she has continued to develop professionally, achieving a number of recruitment and management qualifications while building extensive knowledge of Guernsey’s finance, commercial and professional employment sectors.
For Melissa, the foundations of that success are straightforward but deeply embedded in how she works: hard work, stability, resilience and genuinely caring about every candidate, client and member of her team. That resilience has been particularly important during some of the most challenging periods the recruitment industry and wider economy have experienced. During her time at Situations, Melissa has guided the business through both the 2008/2009 credit crunch and the Covid pandemic of 2020/2021.
Both arrived with enormous and unexpected challenges for the business. Situations responded by persevering, maintaining communication with all stakeholders and continuing to operate to high professional standards. Rather than allowing those periods to define the business negatively, Melissa and her team emerged stronger. Following the pandemic, Situations went on to experience one of its most successful years, an achievement Melissa considers among the proudest moments of her career.
At the centre of her work, however, remains a simple motivation: helping people.
“Helping people – that’s why I do what I do. We spend most of our waking lives at work, so finding our candidates the right job is really important.”
That focus is reflected in the wider philosophy of Situations Recruitment. Rather than approaching recruitment as simply filling vacancies, the agency places emphasis on finding the right match between candidates and employers. Its salaried consultant model, established relationships with hundreds of employers and extensive candidate network support a professional and personal approach to recruitment.
Melissa also values the variety and unpredictability that come with the profession. No two days at Situations are the same, and she often arrives at work without knowing exactly what challenges the day will bring. Far from being a drawback, it is this constant variety and problem-solving that she continues to enjoy.
Her career has been marked by several significant milestones. Becoming a shareholder in 2011 was particularly meaningful because it represented the confidence the company’s founders had placed in her. Completing her various professional qualifications, becoming sole Managing Director in 2021 and subsequently becoming the major shareholder have each represented important stages in her progression.
Yet despite the pressures that have accompanied leadership, difficult economic periods and the responsibility of overseeing a business, Melissa says she has never considered giving up.
Situations has become what she describes as her “other baby”, providing a daily focus and rewarding her in many different ways. Her enthusiasm for the business remains as strong as ever, and she says she has loved every minute of the journey.
An important influence throughout that journey was Situations founder Pat Lynch. Melissa remembers Pat as an inspirational and humorous figure with an astute business mind, an ability to bring complicated matters back to basics and a talent for always seeing the bigger picture.
Although Pat sadly passed away many years ago, her influence remains present in Melissa’s leadership today. When faced with a particularly difficult business situation, Melissa still finds herself considering what Pat would have done. She credits Pat as an important reason she remains in the role she continues to love.
Looking ahead, Melissa and her co-Director remain focused on growth, new opportunities and further development for Situations Recruitment. The company is embracing artificial intelligence, commissioning new software, reviewing its business model and regularly securing new clients as it considers how recruitment and the needs of employers and candidates continue to evolve.
Melissa is also thinking about the long-term future of the company. As part of succession planning, she intends to pass more of her shares to her fellow shareholder over the coming years, helping to support the next stage of Situations’ development and continuity.
For other women considering a similar professional journey or contemplating taking an opportunity outside their original career plans, Melissa’s advice reflects the attitude that has shaped her own progression.
“Give it a go! You don’t know if you don’t try. And believe in yourself. If you try hard, you will succeed.”
Receiving the Influential Woman in Business Award in Recruitment 2026 has provided an opportunity for Melissa to reflect on how far that willingness to try, combined with years of hard work and perseverance, has taken her.
The recognition celebrates not only her longevity within recruitment but also the responsibility involved in overseeing Situations Recruitment, maintaining its standards and helping ensure its continued success.
For Melissa, being recognised for the work she carries out every day feels particularly meaningful. After more than two decades of building the business, supporting candidates and clients, developing her team and navigating both opportunities and significant challenges, the award represents recognition of the commitment and perseverance that have underpinned her career.
From an unexpected introduction to HR while working as a Paralegal to becoming the major shareholder and Managing Director of an established Guernsey recruitment agency, Melissa’s career demonstrates the value of taking opportunities, remaining resilient and never losing sight of the people at the centre of the profession.
As Situations Recruitment continues to evolve through new technology, new clients, business development and future succession planning, Melissa remains focused on the principle that first drew her towards recruitment: helping people find the right opportunities and helping businesses find the right people.
