Iain White-Duncan Named Influential Man in Business for Marketing & Brand Strategy 2026

Award recognises three decades of hospitality, international brand development, marketing leadership and entrepreneurial success.

For Iain White-Duncan, good marketing has never existed separately from the customer experience. It is something shaped by the room a guest walks into, the service they receive, the food in front of them, the way a business communicates and, ultimately, how that experience makes them feel.

That is an understanding developed over more than three decades in hospitality, sales, operations and marketing, and one that has taken him from the kitchens and hotels of his early career to some of the hospitality industry’s most recognisable international brands.

That journey has now earned Iain the Influential Man in Business Award in Marketing & Brand Strategy 2026, recognising not simply an individual campaign or recent success, but a career spent building, repositioning and strengthening brands across hospitality and, more recently, the international automotive services sector.

Iain’s connection to hospitality began long before marketing became his profession. He started as a commis chef at just 13 before going on to study Hospitality Business Management at Manchester Metropolitan University. His early career was grounded firmly in operations, beginning within the luxury country house hotel sector in the Lake District, where he developed standards within a four Red Star and three Rosette environment.

Those operational foundations would become important later.

Rather than approaching marketing solely through advertising or communications, Iain developed an understanding of how a brand is actually experienced by the customer.

His career progressed through management roles at The Lamb Hotel, Holbeck Ghyll Hotel and Alexander’s Live, before a move into sales and marketing at Tiger Tiger Manchester marked the beginning of a new chapter. From there came more than four years with Hard Rock Cafe, where he worked across the UK and Europe, combining sales, events and marketing and working across corporate and franchise operations.

It was an opportunity to take the hospitality knowledge he had developed on the operational side of the industry and apply it on a much broader scale.

That breadth continued to grow.

As Director of Sales & Marketing for Spaghetti House Restaurants, Iain worked with one of London’s established heritage restaurant businesses, developing local marketing strategies and helping refresh a group with more than half a century of trading history. His later consultancy work with Paramount Restaurant Group involved revitalising underperforming sites and refreshing brand identities and sales strategies across several restaurant brands.

At PAUL, the French bakery and patisserie business, his remit extended beyond traditional marketing into UK and international brand management, product development, procurement, supply chain and the strategic review of new store openings.

These roles show an important thread running through Iain’s career: marketing has rarely been treated as the final layer added to a business. Instead, it has been connected to operations, product, environment, commercial performance and the complete customer journey.

That approach became particularly visible during his time as Director of Sales & Marketing with global lifestyle hospitality company The ONE Group.

From London to Milan, Iain was involved in bringing venues and concepts including STK London and Milan, Cucina Asellina, Radio Rooftop Bar, Heliot Steak House and hospitality at ME London and ME Milan to market. His responsibilities ranged from strategic social media direction and reputation management to menu development, food styling, digital platforms, events, creative production and brand positioning.

His work has also extended into the physical identity of hospitality businesses. Iain’s own portfolio records more than 30 restaurants, bars, cafés and hospitality spaces that he has helped redesign, bringing together interior and exterior design with branding, marketing and customer experience. His website reflects the breadth of that career, recording work across 44 brands and 32 venue launches.

It is this ability to move comfortably between the strategic and practical sides of a business that has continued to define his work.

After years spent within restaurants, hotels and hospitality brands, Iain took that experience into another large-scale transformation when he joined IMO Car Wash.

Initially working with the company as a consultant before becoming Marketing Director, he arrived at a point when IMO was preparing for significant change. Following its acquisition by Driven Brands, an extensive rebrand was on the table, but Iain recognised that progress did not have to wait for every physical element to be completed.

“The day I took the full-time seat was the day I said, ‘Enough of this talking. We’re going live today,’” he recalled.

Digital provided the starting point. While physical signage, renovations and site upgrades would inevitably take time, the brand could begin changing immediately online.

What followed became one of the largest transformation projects of Iain’s career.

Over five years, he oversaw brand improvements across more than 700 locations and multiple international markets, helping establish a consistent identity while recognising the practical needs of individual locations. The work extended from signage, uniforms and site presentation to menu boards, new product positioning, digital displays and point-of-sale experiences.

But, as with his hospitality career, the objective was never simply to make the business look different.

It was about changing how customers experienced it.

Iain helped connect IMO’s physical locations with a more modern digital journey, including development of its app and Quick Pay self-service capabilities. The app went on to reach 1.7 million active users, while IMO established a far stronger digital and social presence.

“We’ve now told a really strong story for four years, and we’re recognised for it,” Iain said.

There is an obvious connection between that transformation and the hospitality career that came before it. Whether the customer is arriving at a hotel, booking a restaurant or driving into a car wash, Iain’s approach has centred on the same fundamental question: what does this brand feel like to the person experiencing it?

That philosophy is perhaps most personal at One Drake Road & Apartments in Tavistock.

Together with his husband, Jack, Iain purchased the Grade II-listed Georgian townhouse in 2018 and transformed it into a boutique hotel. Their hospitality portfolio has since expanded to include additional holiday accommodation across Devon and Cornwall.

Here, his experience across operations, interiors, brand development, marketing and customer service comes together within a business of his own.

The results have brought significant recognition. In November 2025, One Drake Road & Apartments won Gold for B&B and Guest House of the Year at the Devon Tourism Awards, adding another milestone to a collection of hospitality and guest-service accolades.

“Tavistock means everything to us,” Iain said following the award. “To be recognised among the very best in Devon, that’s special. We share this success with our friends and family, our guests, and all who choose to stay with us. We’ll continue raising the bar.”

It is also a fitting continuation of a career that began at the operational heart of hospitality.

From a teenage commis chef to hotel management; from high-volume restaurants and international hospitality groups to global marketing leadership; and from advising other businesses to creating an award-winning hospitality brand of his own, Iain’s career has evolved without losing sight of the customer.

His experience now spans operational management, launches and openings, brand transformation, corporate positioning, public relations, reputation, digital strategy, customer experience and international growth.

The Influential Man in Business Award in Marketing & Brand Strategy 2026 recognises the breadth of Iain’s journey and his ability to understand brands from the inside out. For him, a successful brand is not simply a logo, campaign or marketing plan, but the result of positioning, communication, environment, product and service working together to create an experience people remember. Across more than 30 years, that principle has remained consistent, even as the businesses, countries and industries around him have changed.
